EXPOSURE
I expose for the
highlights in the
image [to the right
of the exposure
histogram], to
make sure I don’t remove important
details like the eyes, nose and mouth.

(^2)
BACKGROUND
Ensure that the background is white,
without any distractions, because you
want the focus to be on your subject.

EDIT CAREFULLY
Remember that some photos you may
initially want to discard because of
exposure issues can make great
high-key images. Bear this in mind
while making your initial edit.
JIM’S TIPS FOR BETTER WINTER WILDLIFE
³z…áç…ánٲhññáXzJ³
1
Coming across this snowy owl on a bitterly cold day
was tricky, as the snow was hard and made noise as
I approached. I sat down quietly and waited for her to fly:
shooting with a fast shutter speed of 1/3,200 sec, I was
able to freeze her wings as she took off.
DEER SHOWER
2
A forest near where I live is home to many deer. Winter
is the best time to photograph them, as they’re easier
to track. It can get a little difficult finding them in the dark
part of the forest, but increasing my ISO setting helps a lot,
keeping the shutter speed as fast as the length of my lens.
SNOWSHOE HARE
3
I photograph these hares a lot, but they never sit still. To find one
standing there, looking right at you, is pure luck. I popped my Canon
100-400mm lens through the bushes to grab this shot, and I was really
pleased how it turned out. Perseverance and practice always pays off.
