6 Apple rumors for 2020
Gaze with us at the tech industry’s crystal ball

1
ARM and a leg
The big maybe for 2020 is the
first Mac based on a new Apple ARM
processor. With closer alignment of
software development for Intel–based
macOS and ARM–based iOS hardware,
it makes sense — but the spec and price
are anyone’s guess.
2
Five times OLED
Analyst Jun Zhang reckons we’ll see
six iPhone 12s, including “Pro Plus” units
with time–of–flight depth sensing (and
presumably extra caffeine). All but one
low–end, mid–sized model will have OLED
screens. More surprisingly, they could also
have Touch ID, now behind the screen.
3
Chin up
A new iPhone SE, possibly called
the iPhone 9, could arrive early in
the year. It’s rumored that it will be
styled like the iPhone 8, but could
Apple get away with top and bottom
bezels in 2020? The 2019 iPad 10.2–inch
says maybe.
4
Carolina in their mind
After negotiating to build a new HQ in
North Carolina in 2018, Apple announced
a facility in Austin instead. Yet it did buy
land on NC’s Research Triangle Park. Is a
new campus still on the cards? The state
has a fast–growing auto industry...
5
Now in 3D
Updates to the iPad Pro are overdue,
and if they’ve been waiting for the time–
of–flight depth sensor expected in the
next iPhones, that could mean capturing
3D scenes and objects for instant
touchscreen editing.
6
Edge of tomorrow
Late in 2019, Apple acquired Spectral
Edge, a company based in Cambridge,
UK, that uses infra–red imaging with
machine learning for computational
photography. The chances of this bearing
fruit in 2020, however, are slim.
