WHAT TO REPLACE
AN AUDIO RECORDER
WITH IN 10.15?
Catalina drops support for
32–bit QuickTime, killing
several apps which can record
streamed and system audio.
Among the best replacements
are Rogue Amoeba’s: their
basic Piezo app from bit.ly/
ml164piezo may suffice, or the
more advanced Audio Hijack.
IS THERE A FREE MIDI
PLAYER FOR CATALINA?
Sadly, Apple dropped support
for playing MIDI files in old
versions of QuickTime Player a
decade ago. A new free open
source 64–bit app APPlayMIDI
is now available from bit.ly/
ml164appmidi which works well
in Catalina. Since it’s not
notarized, the first time that
you open it you’ll need to use
the Finder’s Open command
instead of just double–clicking it
WHAT IS ERROR 400
WHEN SYNCING
iCLOUD CALENDAR?
This is a sync failure. Try
disabling calendars in the
iCloud pane, wait a moment,
then enable them again. If that
doesn’t help, quit Calendar,
locate com.apple.iCal.plist in ~/
Library/Preferences and move
it to your Documents folder
before restarting.
HOW TO MAKE SNAPSHOTS
WITHOUT TIME MACHINE?
Snapshots can consume a lot of
storage space. Apple strictly
limits their use to approved
backup utilities, including
Carbon Copy Cloner from
bombich.com, which has the
best controls too..
All CS versions of Adobe’s products, and
even some older CC versions, rely on 32–bit
code and are incompatible with Catalina.
Although most should run reasonably in
Mojave, they can be tricky to get running
at first. You’ll need to download and install
Apple’s legacy Java support from bit.ly/
ml164java, which they require, as they can’t
use a more recent Oracle version of Java.
If you’re moving them to a newly–
formatted Mac, one of the more reliable
methods is to let Migration Assistant copy
them across from the old to the new system
when setting it up. If you can’t do that, you’ll
need to install Photoshop and any other 32–
bit apps from their installers. Because
they’re so old now, you almost certainly
won’t get your own copy of their original
installers to work from the original disc.
However, if you contact Adobe Support and
give them your license details, they should
provide you with a download link for their
legacy products.
Previously, you also had to deactivate the
old installation before you could activate
the new one. That shouldn’t be necessary
any more when you use one of these special
legacy installers. But remember that these
old products are unsupported: if you can’t
get them running after installation, or
can’t use them because of incompatibilities,
there’s little more to be done.
> Moving old Adobe Photoshop
To upgrade my main Mac to Catalina, I need to move my old Adobe Photoshop CS6
to an older Mac which I’ve already upgraded to Mojave. How should I do that?
Getting an old version of Photoshop running in Mojave is made
easier with a downloadable legacy installer from Adobe.
