Whyis it interesting?

Dolby Vision IQ optimises

the picture quality of a

compatible television by

adapting to a room’s

lighting. It uses ambient

light sensors inside a TV to

automatically adjust the screen’s

brightness so that shows and films look

their best. It also reads Dolby Vision

dynamic metadata to tell the TV what

is actually being watched, so it can

optimise the settings scene by scene.

When’s it out?

The first two televisions

to use Dolby Vision IQ

are the Panasonic

HZ2000 OLED (pictured,

left) and the LG Gallery

Series OLED

(pictured, right). Both are due

to go on sale later this year.

How much will it cost?

Prices have not yet been

announced for either set.

Do I really need one?

Although 4K HDR does an excellent job

of showing off your television

programmes and films, the picture

sometimes looks too dark, particularly

in well-lit rooms. Dolby Vision IQ builds

on the standard Dolby

Vision by providing

increased clarity to

whatever you’re

viewing on services

such as Netflix and

Amazon Prime Video.

one?

One look at the S-Pod

and you’ll be dying to

give it a go. But even if

you don’t want to buy

one, the fact that it’s

being designed for use

in enclosed areas such

as shopping centres, theme parks and

airports means you may still get the

chance to take one for a spin.

Why is it interesting?

Inspired by the BB-8 droid character

from Star Wars, Samsung’s spherical

robot will not only follow users

around their homes and respond to

commands, but also carry out

chores by connecting with other

smart devices. Oh, and it makes cute

robotic noises, too.

When’s it out?

Samsung says the Ballie is not ready

for a commercial release just yet.

How much will it cost?

Again, Samsung isn’t playing ball

with any pricing details.

Do I really

need it?

We’d have to

see a more

rounded set

of skills

before we

can really

make a

judgement.
