All your email messages are contained
in the Folders section, sorted into
subfolders such as Inbox, Drafts and

The first thing you should do is
make sure you have the latest
version of VLC. Open VLC and select
Help, then ‘Check for Updates’. There
shouldn’t be any difference between the
installed version and the portable one,
but it is worth trying. Go to the VLC
downloads page (bit.ly/vlcdl494), click
the down arrow next to the Download
button and select the ‘Zip package’.
Copy VLC out of the zip file and run it
from the Downloads folder.
Video effects settings can affect the
video quality and should be reset. Start
the video, press Ctrl+E to open
‘Adjustments and Effects’, then select
the Video Effects tab. Go to each
sub-tab and clear all the options.
There could be a compatibility
problem with the graphics card driver,
so check for updates. Right-click the
Start button and select Device Manager.
Expand ‘Display adaptors’, then
right-click each item listed and click
‘Update driver’. Select the option to
‘Search automatically for drivers’.

Duplicate inboxes in Outlook

Q

When I go to the Outlook website
(www.outlook.com) to check my
email, some items in the sidebar are
duplicated. For example, I have two
Inboxes, two Sent items, two Drafts and
so on. Why is this and how do I get rid
of the duplicates?

There are several sections in
the Outlook website’s left-hand
sidebar. At the top, you’ll find the
Favourites section, then below that is

I decided to scrap my rather
old desktop computer
running Windows 7 Pro and have
replaced it with a very nice new
laptop which already has
Windows 10 Home installed.
Is it possible to upgrade
Windows 10 Home to Windows
10 Pro using my Windows 7 Pro
serial number?
Paul Horbury, via email

A

No, this won’t work. To see your
upgrade options, open the
Settings app and click System, then
select About on the left. On the right,
you’ll see a section called ‘Upgrade
your edition of Windows’. Click
‘Go to the Microsoft Store’ to see
the Pro upgrade listed.
There is a useful Home vs Pro
comparison table that shows the
various features available in each
version. The only thing of value to

home users is BitLocker, which
provides an extra level of security
by encrypting your hard drive.
However, Windows 10 Pro costs £120,
which is a lot of money to pay for disk
encryption.
VeraCrypt is a free open-source
alternative (www.veracrypt.fr) that
lets you create encrypted containers.
These work like virtual hard drives and
any files stored on them are secure.

The upgrade to Windows
Pro doesn’t have much to
offer home users

Folders section below.
To remove a folder from the
Favourites section, right-click it and
choose ‘Remove from Favourites’.
Nothing is deleted, only the shortcut
link is removed.
If you don’t want to go to the trouble
of removing the Favourites shortcuts,
you can simply hide them by collapsing
the Favourites folder. Click the down
arrow to change it to a rightward-
pointing arrow. Just click it again if you
want to reveal the list of folders again.

PRIVAC Y
Delete old browsing history

Q

As you browse the web, everything
you do is stored in your history
and all the websites you visit are
remembered. This is useful because you
can begin typing a URL and a website
suggestion appears, which you can click
to save you having to type the rest of
the address. However, I would prefer to
remove my browsing history after a
certain date, such as 30 days – for
privacy and security reasons.
My thinking is that if I haven’t visited a
website for 30 days, I am probably not
interested in it and won’t mind if the URL
and cached content are deleted. I have
looked in the browser settings but I can’t
find anything to help me remove old and
outdated history items.
