IT’S QUILT-ALONG TIME! We started
our annual American Patchwork & Quilting®
magazine quilt-along in 2014 with Tone
It Down by designer Lissa Alexander.
Since then, we have added a quilt-along
Facebook group and an Instagram hashtag
(#apqquiltalong), both of which make it fun to
follow participants’ progress. For information
on how it all works, visit allpeoplequilt.com/
quiltalong.
For this year’s quilt-along, we’re off ering
another scrappy quilt, Get Together, page 18,
designed by associate editor Diane Tomlinson.
Diane traded 3"-square Nine-Patch units
with several quilting friends and used EQ
software to design a quilt that incorporates
the units into Double Nine-Patch blocks. She
joined the blocks with foundation-paper-
pieced Square-in-a-Square setting squares
and Flying Geese sashing strips for an eye-
appealing design.
We have included tips for trading fabrics if
you like the scrappy look but don’t have the
needed variety of scraps. Diane sewed the
color option in a controlled color palette of
red and white solids for those who prefer two-
color quilts.

Have you tried wool appliqué? I like the
technique because I don’t have to turn under
the edge of a seam allowance. Designer Kim
Schaefer created a whimsical wall quilt,
The Birds and the Bee, page 72, using a
colorful collection of wool and 11 diff erent
embroidery stitches. We have included
information on the kinds of needles and types
of thread she used for the diff erent stitches. If
you haven’t done wool appliqué before, try a
small project like this one to determine if you
like the technique before committing to the
expense of a larger wool project.
In this issue we also off er three star
quilts—a perennial favorite design. A Star Is
Born, page 42, is a kids quilt by designers
Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken. It has one large
center star and borders made with triangle-
squares. Starlight, page 64, a blue-and-white
bed-size quilt by designer Jessica Dayon,
features stars in two sizes. And Natural
Style, page 84, by designer Amanda Wilbert,
showcases Ohio Star blocks with two diff erent
corner squares that create an interesting
secondary design. It looks more diffi cult than
it actually is!
Do you have a favorite quilt block? Let me
know what it is at [email protected].
I love to hear from readers!
