American Patchwork & Quilting - USA (2020-04)

(Antfer) #1
In each unit, navy sailboat batik
pieces serve as the background for
two additional batiks; one batik is
used in positions A and C and the
other is used in positions B and D
(Fabric Placement Diagram). Refer to
circled numbers in diagrams for fabric
placement in each unit.

1

Referring to Diagram 1, lay
out the following pieces in four
vertical rows:
▫ navy sailboat batik: two 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 41 ⁄ 2 "
rectangles and four 2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ fabric 1 (positions A and C): one
21 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangle and one 2^1 ⁄ 2 "
square
▫ fabric 2 (positions B and D): one
21 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangle and one 2^1 ⁄ 2 "
square

2

Sew together Step 1 pieces in
rows. Join rows to make Unit 1
(Diagram 1). The unit should be 8^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

3

Using fabric 3 pieces for positions
A and C, repeat steps 1 and 2 to
make two of Unit 2 (Diagram 2).

4

Using fabric 4 pieces for positions
A and C, repeat steps 1 and 2 to
make Unit 3 (Diagram 3).

5

Referring to Diagram 4, lay out
units 1–3 in pairs. Sew together
units in pairs. Join pairs to make
Block A. The block should be 16^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.
Repeat steps 1–5 to make three
A blocks total.

From each purple leaf batik (fabric 6)
and purple wave batik (fabric 7), cut:
▫ 20—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 20—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From periwinkle fish batik
(fabric 8), cut:
▫ 27—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 27—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From multicolor flower batik
(fabric 2), cut:
▫ 9—6^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips for outer border
▫ 9—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips
▫ 32—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 32—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From each blue sailboat batik
(fabric 1) and blue wave batik
(fabric 9), cut:
▫ 16—2^1 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 16—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
