BACKSTITCH


To backstitch, thread needle with
perle cotton No. 8. Pull needle up at
A (Backstitch Diagram). Insert it
back into fabric at B, bring it up at
C, and push it down at D. Continue
in same manner to make the desired
number of backstitches.

EMBROIDERY STITCHES


BLANKET STITCH


To blanket stitch, thread needle
with perle cotton No. 8. Pull needle
up at A (Blanket Stitch Diagram).
Form a reverse L shape with
thread. Holding angle of L shape
in place with your thumb, push
needle down at B and come up
at C to secure stitch. Continue in
same manner to make the desired
number of blanket stitches.

COUCHING STITCH


To couch, lay out perle cotton No. 3
along perimeter of a shape. Thread
needle with a contrasting perle
cotton No. 8 color. Bring needle up at
A (Couching Stitch Diagram), along
edge of perle cotton No. 3, and push
it down at B. Bring needle up again
at C, about^1 ⁄ 8 " from A, and push it
down at D. Continue in same manner
to secure length of perle cotton No. 3.

FRENCH KNOT


To make a French knot, thread
needle with perle cotton No. 8.
Bring needle up at A (French Knot
Diagram), the point where knot is
desired. Wrap thread around needle
twice. Insert tip of needle into fabric
at B,^1 ⁄ 16 " away from A. Gently push
wraps down needle to meet fabric.
Pull needle and trailing thread
through fabric slowly and smoothly.

LAZY DAISY STITCH


To make lazy daisy stitches, thread
needle with perle cotton No. 8. Pull
needle up at A (Lazy Daisy Stitch
Diagram); form a loop of thread on
fabric surface. Holding loop in place,
insert needle back into fabric at B,
about^1 ⁄ 16 " from A. Bring needle tip out
at C and cross it over trailing thread,
keeping thread as flat as possible.
Gently pull needle and trailing thread
until loop lies flat against fabric. Push
needle through to back at D to secure
loop. Repeat to make the desired
number of lazy daisy stitches.

RUNNING STITCH


To make running stitches, thread
needle with perle cotton No. 8. Pull
needle up at A (Running Stitch
Diagram) and insert it back into
fabric at B. Bring needle up at C and
push it down at D. Continue in same
manner, loading several stitches
on needle at a time, to make the
desired number of running stitches.
