STAR STITCH
To make a star stitch, thread
needle with perle cotton No. 8.
Bring needle up at A (Star Stitch
Diagram) and insert it back into
fabric at B (the star center). Bring
needle up at C and push it down
again at star center (B). Continue
stitching in alphabetical order,
inserting needle into fabric at
center each time.
STEM STITCH
To stem-stitch, thread needle with
perle cotton No. 8. Pull needle up at A
(Stem Stitch Diagram). Insert it back
into fabric at B, about^1 ⁄ 4 " away from A.
Holding thread out of the way, bring
needle back up at C and pull thread
through so it lies flat against fabric.
Continue in same manner to make the
desired number of stem stitches.
STRAIGHT STITCH
To straight-stitch, thread needle
with perle cotton No. 8. Pull needle
up at A (Straight Stitch Diagram)
and push it down at B to complete
one stitch. Bring needle up at C and
push it down at D for second stitch.
Continue in same manner to make
desired number of stitches.
WHIPSTITCH
To whipstitch, thread needle with
cotton sewing thread that matches
appliqué. Bring needle up at A
(Whipstitch Diagram) along the
appliqué edge. Push needle down
at B and bring it up at C. Continue
in same manner around entire
appliqué shape.
WRAPPED BACKSTITCH
To make wrapped backstitches,
thread needle with perle cotton
No. 8. Backstitch a line. Using a
contrasting perle cotton No. 8
color, pull needle up at A (Wrapped
Backstitch Diagram), just below
first backstitch. Slide needle under
next stitch, wrapping thread over
the backstitch. Pull thread through
and slide needle under next stitch.
Continue in same manner to wrap
each backstitch.
