Referring to Diagram 3, sew

together two A segments and one

B segment. Referring to Diagram 4,

add a cream tone-on-tone 1^1 ⁄ 2 × 31 ⁄ 2 "

rectangle to right-hand edge and a

cream tone-on-tone 1^1 ⁄ 2 × 41 ⁄ 2 " rectangle

to bottom edge to make a chain

unit. The unit should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square

including seam allowances. Repeat to

make 72 chain units total.

ASSEMBLE A BLOCKS

Gather two 5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares from

one print, one 5^1 ⁄ 2 " square from a

second print, one cream tone-on-tone

51 ⁄ 2 " square, one cream tone-on-tone

41 ⁄ 2 " square, and four chain units.

Use a pencil to mark a diagonal

line on wrong side of the matching

print 5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares.

Layer a marked print square

atop cream tone-on-tone 5^1 ⁄ 2 "

square. Sew together with two seams,

stitching^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side of drawn line

(Diagram 5). Cut pair apart on drawn

line; press open to make two cream

triangle-squares. Each triangle-square

should be 5^1 ⁄ 8 " square including seam

allowances.

Repeat Step 3 with remaining

marked print square and

unmarked second print 5^1 ⁄ 2 " square

to make two print triangle-squares

(Diagram 6).

Mark a diagonal line

perpendicular to seam line on

wrong side of each cream triangle-

square.

Layer a marked cream triangle-

square atop a print triangle-

square with each first print triangle

facing a cream tone-on-tone or first

print triangle (Diagram 7). Sew^1 ⁄ 4 "

from each side of drawn line. Cut pair

apart on drawn line; press open to

make two hourglass units. Trim each

unit to 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam

allowances. Repeat to make four

hourglass units total.

CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.

From black tone-on-tone, cut:

▫ 9—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

▫ 9—1^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips

▫ 25—1^1 ⁄ 2 " sashing squares

From cream tone-on-tone, cut:

▫ 36—5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

▫ 108—4^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

▫ 14—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips

▫ 6—1^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips

▫ 60—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 121 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles

▫ 72—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 41 ⁄ 2 " rectangles

▫ 72—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 31 ⁄ 2 " rectangles

From each assorted print, cut:

▫ 6—5^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

▫ 4—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares

ASSEMBLE CHAIN UNITS

Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam

allowances. Sew with right sides

together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated

by arrows on diagrams. If no direction

is specified, press seam toward darker

fabric.

Sew together a black tone-on-tone

11 ⁄ 2 ×42" strip and a cream tone-on-

tone 2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strip to make Strip Set A

(Diagram 1). Repeat to make six A strip

sets total. Cut strip sets into 144—1^1 ⁄ 2 "-

wide A segments.

Sew together two cream tone-

on-tone 1^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strips and one

black tone-on-tone 1^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" strip to

make Strip Set B (Diagram 2). Repeat

to make three B strip sets total. Cut

strip sets into seventy-two 1^1 ⁄ 2 "-wide

B segments.
