CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.
The patterns are on Pattern Sheet 1.
To make templates of patterns, see
Make and Use Templates, page 108. Be
sure to transfer dots from patterns to
templates and then to fabric pieces.
The dots are matching points, which
are used when setting in seams.

From assorted 1930s reproduction
prints, cut:
▫ 150 of Pattern A
From solid orange, cut:
▫ 64—2^1 ∕ 2 ×13" sashing rectangles
▫ 150 of Pattern B or 150—1^7 ∕ 8 "
squares
From solid green, cut:
▫ 9—2^1 ∕ 2 ×42" binding strips
▫ 40—2^1 ∕ 2 " sashing squares
▫ 25 of Pattern C
From solid ivory, cut:
▫ 3—21^3 ∕ 4 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for 12
setting triangles total
▫ 25—13" squares for appliqué
foundations
▫ 2—12^1 ∕ 2 " squares, cutting each
in half diagonally for 4 corner
triangles total

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS

The key to sewing angled pieces
together (setting in seams) is carefully
aligning marked matching points
(dots on fabric pieces). Whether
you’re stitching by machine or hand,
start and stop sewing precisely at the
matching points; be sure to backstitch
to secure seam ends.
Measurements include^1 ∕ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.

1

Layer two assorted 1930s print
A diamonds; align edges. Referring
to Diagram 1, sew together a pair of

edges between matching points to
make a diamond pair; do not sew into

(^1) ∕ 4 " seam allowances at beginning
and end of seam. Repeat to make 75
diamond pairs total.

2

Referring to Diagram 2, pin a
solid orange B square to inside
corner of a diamond pair. Align
matching points at inside corner,
pushing a pin through both fabric
layers to check alignment. Begin
stitching at center dot on diamond
pair and sew out to second matching
point on square; do not sew into^1 ∕ 4 "
seam allowances. Bring adjacent edge
of square up to next edge of diamond
pair; sew from center dot out to
second matching point to make a bud
unit. Repeat to make 75 bud units total.

3

On wrong side of each bud unit,
turn seam allowances of top edges
under^1 ∕ 4 " (Diagram 3); press.

4

On a remaining solid orange B
square, turn seam allowances of
two adjacent edges under^1 ∕ 4 "; press.

FINISHED QUILT: 821 ∕ 2 "

FINISHED BLOCK: 121 ∕ 2 " square
