The18th-centuryEnglishmanWilliamKentis most
famousasa landscapearchitect,originatingwhat
becameknownastheEnglishLandscapeGardenstyle.
Theinnovativedesignerbeganhiscareer,however,as
a painter,servingasa courtartistbeforeventuring
intootherfields.Whenyouconsiderthatgoodgar-
dendesignreliesona skillfuluseofform,line,
texture,scaleandcolor,is it anywonderthatsomany
fineartistsdiscover—asKentdid—they’realsowell
adaptedtotheartofhorticulture?
