“Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of
Wedgwood and His Contemporaries” focuses
on the decorative ceramic wares produced in
the late 18th century, created by mixing clay
with manganese and carr, an oxide with iron
taken from coal mines. The result was black
basalt, and artists in Staffordshire, England,
used the unique material to replicate classic
works of art made in ancient Greece and
Rome. Neoclassical interiors were popular
at the time, and Josiah Wedgwood, as well
as other potters, used the medium to create
life-sized busts, statues, vases, plaques,
medallions and medals. The exhibition
displays more than 100 objects.
