aspects of life, becoming increasingly complex
as the technology evolves, are humans still
capable of sufficiently testing the multitude of
possible scenarios?
COMPUTERS AND (A LACK OF)
COMMON SENSE
In traditional programming, a human calculates
the possible steps involved within a given
process, including the delicate ‘if-then-else’
alternative scenarios that could arise. Then, a
program is written to quickly process these
steps. If successful enough, the program is rolled
out, and any unforeseen issues subsequently
identified are fixed with updates and patches.
In such circumstances, the original program
is replaced or overwritten. However, it may
be identified that scenarios exist where the
program needs to be overridden. But what if this
doesn’t work? Who does a human turn to if the
computer won’t let this happen? Furthermore,
who does a computer contact if it’s sure that
the human, telling them they’re wrong, is also
effectively malfunctioning?
