Multitask with your Mac & iOS
Keeping a tidy desktop
In order to multitask, staying organised is a necessity. It’s no good having picture,
document and file debris scattered all over your screen as it hinders the speed at which
you can locate the items that you need. Thankfully, Catalina caters well for your mess.
Catalina comes packed with features to help you work more efficiently and keep your
desktop neatly organised. Here are some of our favourites...
Organising your desktop
Group Stacks
If you Ctrl+click on the desktop
again and highlight the ‘Group
Stacks by’ option, you have the
freedomto decide how your files are
grouped.By kind is the default.
Be kind to your eyes
As this feature is all about
working more effectively, it
is important to consider the
conditions. Go to System
Preferences>Display>Night Shift
to schedule a warmer colour
palette for the evening.
Use Stacks
If you have files
scattered all over your
display, Ctrl+click
on the desktop and
choose ‘Use Stacks’.
All of your stuff will then
be grouped together
by type, making them
easier to find.
One folder to rule them all
In modern Macs, keeping neatly
organised file hierarchies is a waste
of time as it actually takes longer to
access your files. You’re better off
having one master folder that you dump
everything in and then using Spotlight
(Cmd+spacebar) to type what you need.
Use Dark Mode
A Dark appearance has been recently introduced
to macOS to make it less stressful on your
eyes when working at night. Go to System
Preferences>General and select ‘Auto’ to have it
kick in with your scheduled Night Shift.
Stacks help you keep an organised desktop and allow you to find the items that you need far quicker than
if everything was strewn everywhere. Here’s how to use and manage Stacks.
How to use Stacks
1
Click the desktop
If you have lots of clutter on your
screen, Ctrl+click and choose the ‘Use
Stacks’ option. Everything will now be neatly

your desktop, making it easy to find what you
need. Click a Stack to close it again.

choose ‘Show View Options’, you can adjust
the size of the icons and grid spacing, as well
