WatchOS 6
Step-by-step Use Watch Handoff with Messages
1
Check Messages
Ensure your iPhone and Apple Watch are
connected and launch the Messages app on
your Apple Watch. Scroll through the texts that
have been sent to you in the usual manner.
2
Read a text
If you need to read a message, then tap
on it. As you do so, your connected iPhone
will automatically notice the Messages app is
open as well as the text you are viewing.
3
Launch App Switcher
If you don’t want to read and reply to the
message on your wrist, then grab your iPhone
and, on X models and later, swipe up from the
bottom edge to launch the App Switcher.

Handoff tasks from
Apple Watch to iPhone
T
he Apple Watch is great for checking things such
as your messages, emails, calendar events and
the latest news. Yet the small screen isn’t very
comfortable if a task requires greater engagement.
Sometimes you’ll start a task on your Watch only to
realise that you’d be better served with a larger display
or the convenience of the iPhone keyboard. In these
circumstances, you can hand the task over.
Doing so is straightforward and if you haven’t already
worked out how to do it, you’ll be mightily pleased that
it can be done. It’s all part of Apple’s efforts to provide
continuity between its devices. Just make sure that your
devices are all connected to each other and that every one
of them is signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID with
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff turned on. You can then get
started with our representative example, Messages, to
demonstrate how Apple Watch Handoff works.
If you don’t want to squint at the small screen of your Watch,
you can pick up a task on your iPhone instead
