RUARK AUDIO’S MRX
wireless speaker is very
much the best of British –
unassuming, sophisticated and
stylish, yet very loud and bolshy when
required. The unit consists of a hand-
crafted, bass reflex tuned and damped
enclosure coated in a rich walnut veneer,
with a lead grey British milled fabric
grille, and is finished off perfectly with
a push-in silver alloy stand that allows
you to position the speaker in portrait or
landscape orientations. It’ll look amazing

Inside the MRX are twin 75mm full-
range drivers that are mounted as a stereo
pair into tuned bass reflex enclosures
and complemented by a powerful
neodymium magnet system for a high-end
performance. The drivers are powered
by a high-fidelity, two-channel Class
A-B amplifier and, using the latest sound
processing technology, Ruark has further
tuned the sound to create a stunning
soundstage that you’d be forgiven for
thinking is coming from a much bigger
speaker than the modest 180x300x180mm
unit sat before you here.
Built for streaming, the MRX features
an enticing array of listening options.
Its Bluetooth 4.0, SBC, AAC, A2DP and
aptX enabled audio receiver provides CD
quality sound from compatible devices
and, by connecting the unit to your
broadband, you can also access internet
radio and your favourite online streaming
services, including Spotify, Deezer, Tidal
and Amazon Music.
If you want to use the MRX as a
companion piece to other hardware then it
has an array of wired connections. With a
combined line-in and digital optical input,
you can connect auxiliary devices, such
as a turntable, and a USB playback port
adds a further option by allowing youto conveniently play music stored on a
memory stick or portable hard drive. The
connection options are completed by an
ethernet port so that you can hardwire the
speaker into your network if your Wi-Fi
signal is unreliable.Instant connect
The MRX produces a warm, clear sound
that can be really stretched to epic
proportions. Even at the higher volumes,
the sound maintains its clarity and the
damped enclosure does a great job of
holding it together and preventing any
unwanted distortion or vibration. A switch
on the back of the speaker even allows
you to toggle between stereo/mono and
the left/right driver and, should you need
to, you can also wirelessly link the MSX
to other models in Ruark Audio’s range
for multiroom, synchronised sound.
Remote control is carried out via your
iOS device thanks to the Ruark Link app.
Available from the App Store, Ruark Link
provides the means to set up your system,
adjust the EQ, connect to the internet and
choose your streaming source quickly and
easily thanks to its intuitive interface.
For such a compact unit, the MSX
really sings, but it is the aesthetics as
well as the sound quality that make
it so desirable. The metal stand is a
masterstroke that really sets this apart
from other wireless speakers of a similar
size and style as it helps to lift the unit
out of the background and turn it into a
