I

’m one of those people whose

bedside table has been taken

over by a towering stack of

books. (Currently an early Brontë,

a beginner’s guide to meditation, and

the latest Man Booker Prize winner.)

I’m never happier than when I have

a book in my hands, which probably

stems from the many childhood days

I spent reading in my local library.

Curled up on a window seat in the children’s room, I worked

my way through Laura Ingalls Wilder, Madeleine L’Engle,

Beverly Cleary, and other favorites. I’m still a frequent patron

of my town library, but the hushed mausoleum of years past

has evolved into an essential hub of community life and

now features offerings as eclectic as genealogical services,

coding classes, and craft circles. Woman’s Day is working

with the American Library Association to highlight some of

the activities happening nationwide (see page 18). As this

issue was going to press, I learned that federal funding of

libraries is in jeopardy. To have your voice heard, contact

your elected officials and tell them libraries should remain

vibrant gathering spaces for everyone—including that little

kid reading in a corner, utterly captivated by the power of

words. Let’s make sure libraries continue to bring us together

while helping us get lost in the best possible way.

GREAT READ
Jo Giese’s memoir about
her spunky mom, Babe,
is a lovely tribute to an
extraordinary woman.
($15, at amazon.com and
independent bookstores)

my favorite candles).
The Grapefruit &
Verbena Body Mist
($20, ulta.com) smells
so good (hint, hint...).

MEET

ASHLEY!
I’m excited to
welcome WD’s
new family food

Rodriguez, the
cook and writer behind the blog
Not Without Salt (notwithoutsalt
.com). She describes her food as
“simple, classic, and nutritious,”
and I’m sure your clan will agree.
Her debut column is on page 8 2.

Perfect
for sipping: the
botanical garden–
inspired Jardin tea
collection from Tea
Forté. ($22, tea
forte.com)
