Good Day

STEP 1

Stand with your back

pressing into a wall behind
you, then step both feet

forward about 18 inches.

STEP 2
Bend your knees

90 degrees without letting

them go beyond your toes.
Hold as long as you can,

working up to a minute.
Repeat any time you’re just

standing around.

STANDING

WALL SQUAT

This easy exercise will

strengthen your thighs

and firm your tush, says

Joey Gonzalez, CEO

of Barry’s fitness studios.

SMART MOVE

Honor

Memorial Day

Six ways to remember America’s fallen heroes.

TAKE A BREAK The National Moment of Remembrance,
established by Congress in 2000, is a minute-long pause meant

to raise awareness of and commemorate those who served

(3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day).

TURN ON THE TV The night before Memorial Day, tune in to the

National Memorial Day Concert, which includes documentary
footage and dramatic readings that honor military service

(May 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET on PBS).

SEND LETTERS Write thank-you notes or put together care

packages for deployed personnel and veterans through

nonprofits such as A Million Thanks (amillionthanks.org) and
Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude.com).

DONATE FLOWERS When you sponsor flowers through
Memorial Day Flowers, the foundation’s volunteers will lay your

blooms and hundreds of others at veterans’ grave sites in 40

cemeteries nationwide (starting at $5, memorialdayflowers.org).

HOST A POTLUCK At this year’s weekend barbecue, encourage

everyone to bring a dish that reminds them of a family member—
military or otherwise—who contributed to America’s freedom.

Share their stories before you dig in.

LEARN THEIR STORIES Listen to recordings from veterans and
their families through StoryCorps oral history (storycorps.org

/discover/military-voices) or pick up a military-related memoir

or other nonfiction book (like The Fighters by C.J. Chivers).

Customize

Some Bins

Instead of letting unruly

belts, scarves, and bags

pile up in your closet,

make your own storage

containers from cardboard

boxes. First, remove a

box’s top flaps and cut

it down to your desired

height. Then wrap it in

pretty paper and attach

a label to the front.
