WHY IT’S HOT Bakelite is a hard
plastic resin developed in 1907 that,
thanks to its ability to take the heat, was
fi rst used for industrial purposes. But
molded Bakelite was spun into costume
jewelry in the 1920s, and by the 1930s
and ’40s, it had become all the rage,
with colorful and carved bracelets
stacking up as the most popular pieces.
Though demand for the bangles has
gone up and down through the years,
interest in retro objects from plastic’s
early years means the bright bangles
are coming around again. “Costume
jewelry is always popular,” says Jim
Renninger of Renninger’s Promotions in
Pennsylvania and Florida, “especially
vintage pieces that off er quality without
a high price tag.”

HINT A few tests will help you separate
true Bakelite from the “fakelites.” First,
authentic Bakelite will create a dull,
clunking sound when two pieces are
tapped together. Your nose will know,
too; vigorously rub the edge of a piece
with your thumb until it’s warm and take
a whiff. It should have a scent similar to
formaldehyde.
COST Heavily carved, hinged, or
polka-dot bracelets are the most
coveted; they can fetch well over $100
each. Fun, graphic animal brooches are
another hot item and typically sell for
$75 to $100. You can snag more common
pieces for less than $25, especially when
bought as part of a lot.
