UseBlendIf to applytheSolid
Colorlayerto thehighlights
Now you’ve chosen the colours you want to apply,it’s
ti me to refine them based on the luminance values. In the Layers
palette, click the eye icon on the Color Fill 2 layer to hide it,and
th en click on Color Fill 1 to activate it. Now double-click onthat
la yer to open the Layer Styles palette. At the bottom of the palette
yo u will see two bars going from black to white under the title
Bl end If. Ensure the drop-down menu is set to Gray. Now, to
ensure this colour effect is only applied to the highlights, clickthe
bl ack slider on the Underlying Layer bar and drag it to the right
until you see the colour disappear from the darker parts of your
im age. Don’t worry if it looks a bit rough at this point. Whenyou’re
ha ppy your colour is applied where you want it, hold the Altkey
an d click the left-hand side of the same slider arrow, draggingit
to the left. This will split the slider into two parts, and it allows
yo u to feather the effect to make it appear more natural. ClickOK
when you’re happy with the results.

This time, click on
Color Fill 2 and make sureit’s
vi sible by clicking the eye icon.
Double-click as before to opentheLayerStylespaletteandthis
ti me click and drag the right-handslideron theUnderlyingLayer
scale back towards the centre.Thiswill removethecolourfromthe
brighter parts of the image. As before, once you have removed the
layer effects from the highlights and brighter midtones, hold down
the Alt key and click and drag on the right-hand side of the arrow
slider, splitting it and moving it to the right. This will balance out
the effect and create an even merge between the tones. Click OK
when you’re happy. You have now completed the split-toning
effect, but because this is a non-destructive technique, you are
able to change the colours at any time. To do this, double-click
on the colour thumbnail to the left of the layer and use the Color
Picker to choose a new colour.
