STICKTO YOURTHEME

#15 Lighting

Keep it consistent throughout the
images. Fashion editorials are made
of a series of images all revolving around
a certain theme. Whereas it can be nice to
introduce little variations here and there,
these images should mainly look like they
visually belong together. It’s common, for
instance, to shoot an entire fashion editorial
without changing the initial lighting setup.
It’s quicker and just as effective. But it’s also
acceptable to ‘tweak’ the lighting based on
the styling and composition of each new
look we’re photographing. Adding an extra
softbox to a soft lighting setup, for instance,
will probably not interfere with the coherency
of the series, but changing an octabox for
a lamp reflector with a blue gel might.

Do you have the right
permissions to shoot
in your chosen location?
Most places in the UK require
permission to shoot in, and not
having one could mean being
interrupted mid-shoot. This is
especially true for commercial
projects, but even editorials
and personal shoots require
permissions, and may
sometimes involve fees too.
Better to be safe and ensure
all permissions are
in place before the
day of the shoot,
so you’re relaxed
