SAMPLE ALL LAYERS
This button is useful if you
are working on a multi-
layered document: you
won’t need to target a
specific layer, but rather
make the tool behave as if
it’s working on a flattened
version of your image. With
this unchecked, you need
to make sure the right layer
is highlighted in the Layers
Panel before you make a
selection. (Hold Cmd/Ctrl
and right-click over part of
the image to view all the
layers at that point.)

AUTO-ENHANCE
After making an initial
selection, the edge will
usually be hard and jagged.
It’s often essential to
improve the edge to make
it more precise – especially
so if the subject has hair, fur
or feathers. Auto-Enhance
automatically improves the
selection edge as you paint

  • but it can drastically slow
    down the tool. Often it’s
    best to turn Auto-Enhance
    off, and instead bring the
    selection into Select And
    Mask afterwards.

FROM SELECTION TO MASK
Our selection here follows a
simple routine. Click Select
Subject, then paint over
the tree with the Quick
Selection Tool, then run the
selection through Select
And Mask. Now convert
the selection into a Layer
Mask with the Add Mask
button in the Layers Panel.
This hides everything
outside the selection and
removes the background.
Now you can simply copy in
a new background, and the
replacement is made!
