itwasaratherfunandnovelexperiencetobestoodinfrontof

an audience trying to find constructive advice to a succession of

paintings(andonesculpture)thatIhadonlyjustseteyesupon.

Therewerelessonsformyselfintheexperiencetoo.Oneartist

hadpaintedanudewithratherthickillustrativelines,whichIfeltcontrasted

badlywiththemoreexpressivebackground.Embarrassingly,I’dalreadytold

himtosoftenthoseoutlineswhenIdiscoveredthatwashisfavouritepartof

thepictureandhisaimallalong.Fortherestofthesession,Imadeapointof

askingeachartist’sintentionfirstsoIcouldbetterguidethemtowardstheir

chosenends,ratherthanforcingthemtochangethingsasImayhavewanted.

Theexperienceunderlinedformethefactthatthereisnorightorwrong

answerinart.Withthatinmind,Ihopethearticlesinthisissuegiveyousome

practicaladviceandgentleguidanceasyoutrytofindyourownchosenpath.
