EDITOR’S

NOTE

Get grilling!

I

am an avid griller. With the exception of a few snow
days here in New England, I am armed with grill tools,
marinades and BBQ-inspired recipes 12 months a year.
Some of my family favorites include grilled swordfish and
tuna steaks—each gently seasoned with olive oil, lemon,
black pepper and salt; steak, chicken and pork also rank
among our top mealtime choices.
But grilling doesn’t only apply to the main course. In
this issue of Diabetes Self-Management, Food Editor Amy
Campbell, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, handpicks nearly two-
dozen grilled veggie, main dish and fruit recipes and
shares healthy grilling tips. Adding a bit of spice to the
editorial lineup, nutrition and diabetes expert Lea Ann
Holzmeister, RD, CDE, discusses a variety of ways to season
and tenderize and offers nutritional information around
some of the most popular marinades.
Beyond barbecuing, our editorial team covers a wealth
of topics related to diabetes medications (generic insulin
and metformin), alternative and complimentary therapies,
and exercise. To get a sense of where we are today and the
future of diabetes care, contributor Quinn Phillips interviews
experts from Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine and
Massachusetts General Hospital, and discusses continuous
glucose monitors, T2D medications and much more.
With each issue, we strive to spotlight a diabetes champion
and the May/June issue is on point. Celebrity chef and
diabetes advocate Charles Mattocks shares his personal
journey with Type 2 diabetes, his quest to increase awareness,
and mission to transform the lives of others via his diabetes
reality television show, “Reversed.”
Our coverage doesn’t end there. Throughout these
pages, you will also find diabetes news and updates, product
information, ways to jumpstart your workout plan and
more. Read on and as always, my hope is you will learn
something new, find inspiration and share your learnings
with others.

Best,
