Barrons AP Calculus - David Bock

(dmanu) #1

  1. (C) Call the time in hours t and the function for visitors/hour R(t). Then the area under the curve
represents the number of visitors V. We will estimate the time k when using a
    Riemann sum.

The table shows one
approach, based on
the Midpoint Rule.

Hour Visitors/hour (midpoint est.) Total visitors since noon
Noon–1 P.M. 5 5
1−2 P.M. 25 30
2−3 P.M. 70 100
3−4 P.M. 120 220
We estimate that there had been about 100 visitors by 3 P.M. and 220 by 4 P.M., so the 200th
visitor arrived between 3 and 4 P.M.
