Soaking in His


Surroundings


Before Chow begins to paint, he fi rst
takes a moment to bask in his sur-
roundings and take pleasure in the
smallest details. “Generally, I’ll fi rst


relax at the scene and take a deep
breath to feel the atmosphere,” he
says. “I’ll notice the breeze, the chirp-
ing sound of a bird or the joyful
laughter of children.” Once Chow has
settled into the scene, he’ll use his
smartphone or camera to record the
angles and details to which he’s
drawn. He’ll then proceed to draw
a simple sketch of the scene before
heading back to his studio.

Chow arranges his studio so that
he has plenty of room to spread out.
“I like a studio with a lot of space,” the
artist says. “I place my painting equip-
ment, watercolors, sketches and oil
paintings in diff erent rooms. I can’t
stand having to spend a long time
searching for a piece.” In addition to
