- Carefully plan your
composition and decide on
your palette before you begin. - A more harmonious painting
is created with fewer
colors—not more. - Use a medium (140-lb.
minimum) or heavy support,
and stretch the paper if you
possibly can. The surface will
stay flat and allow for better
washes and marks. - Work with a large brush,
only changing to a small one
when absolutely necessary.
A large brush is more exciting
and allows for more
expressive mark-making. - Allow for those “happy
accidents” when you paint.
Things that sometimes don’t go
according to plan can be the
best part of a fi nished painting.
