REVIVAL

ARTIST KATHLEEN S. GILES
EXPLAINS HOW SHE USES VARIOUS
TECHNIQUES WITH WHITE PAINT
TO REVIVE SCRUBBED-OUT PAPER.

LEFT
I had trouble making
the shadowed areas
of skin look smooth
in Sarah (watercolor
on paper, 36x25), but
ended up sealing them
with white paint so that
I could wash over the
areas with a darker
glaze to achieve the
smooth, brushless look
I wanted. The piece won
fi rst place in the 2018
Pittsburgh Watercolor
Society Show.

OPPOSITE
I scrubbed out some
highlights on the
subject’s face and
the outer edges
of her hair in A
Certain Something
(transparent water-
color on paper, 21x15).
I glazed the scrubbed
areas on her face
using a transparent
orange mixture.
I think the scrubbed
areas on the outer
sections of her
hair provide a soft
transition to the dark
background.
