HOOKY TREASURE

R
eally, it is so difficult to choose my one
favourite crocheted make, as I always find the
one I like most is the one I’m working on at that
time! However, one of the ones that never fails
to bring a smile to my face is the Petal Patch
Blanket that I finished earlier this year (although it
did take over a year to make). That’s probably
because it’s always wrapped around my daughter
Poppy! She loves it. It’s always really lovely when
you make something for someone and you get to
see them using it, and I think that’s why I
particularly love making blankets – there’s nothing
better than seeing someone cuddled up in
something you’ve put so much care and time into.
It’s wonderful when you get the genuine sense that
your work is appreciated, particularly when a
design ends up taking so much time like this one.
The blanket is made in an aran weight cotton,
specifically Epic from Yarn and Colors. I chose this
for a few reasons – because of the yarn’s 100-shade
colour range, also its softness, and also because it
washes really well! The breathable cotton is perfect
for the summer, but the aran yarn is heavy enough
for snuggling up in during winter too.
I’ve actually made two Petal Patch blankets – the
first one was made up using greens, pink and aqua.
I really love how changing the colours can make
such a massive difference, so when Poppy asked for
pinks I was more than happy to oblige (although
she did have to wait a while and was very patient!),
Who can say no to a little girl who loves pink?
This was the second pattern that I ever wrote, and
I found it was much more enjoyable than the first as
there wasn’t quite as much to get my head around,
plus I wasn’t so nervous! In fact I got a bit excited
and included the blanket, bunting, small mandala,
large mandala and even a yarn Easter egg!
Eventually I had to stop myself, and not a moment
too soon! I always get carried away when designing,
which is why quite often my patterns end up
including more than one design.
Petal Patch Blanket is a great project to work on,
and really just uses the basic stitches so it’s really
easy to follow. I’d love to make one in lots of colours
one day, so it really is like patchwork.
