Ten questions with Steve
Barnett of the band Pump5
- How did your band originate?
Originally we were all indifferent bands, we were local
California groups. We put together a band called FACE
which turned into Pump5 a few years later. It started as rival
bands, that story you hear a lot. We put it together, and have
been together for over ten years now. The band consists of
me Steve Barnett, Drew Cates, and Andrew Bontner which
are the core members. Also we have Alex Kane on guitar. - Is there any music or musician that inspired you as an
artist?
Personally yes, Robin Zander of Cheap Trick he is my
GOD that I look up to as an artist, But of course just about
everything from Led Zeppelin and some of the older stuff
like Black Oak Arkansas. But Cheap Trick was one of my
biggest influences. - I see that the band is touring in April of this year, any
plans to extend the tour and perhaps come down to south
Florida?
At the moment I think we go to Europe in May. So Florida
hopefully we will be there in the summer or early fall. - Is there a musician past or present that you would love to
go on stage and perform with?
Besides Robin Zander of course I say John Bonham the
drummer for Led Zeppelin. He would be a killer drummer
to be on stage with, that would just be incredible, - How did the name Pump 5 originate? Actually it’s kind
of a not positive and sad story about a dog, I live near
an interchange in California where people come and go.
Someone left their dog at the gas pump#5. It was a chow,
and they clearly abandoned the dog. The dog thought they
would return for him as weeks, and over a month went
by and the dog would not move, I tried to feed it and kept
thinking one day this dog was going to get hit. I named
the dog Pump5. Unfortunately that happened and it was
terrible. At that time we were looking to change the name of
the band and I said “how about Pump5?” and that is how it
actually happened. - Music cruises are very popular now, is that something the
band would consider if asked?
Absolutely!! I think it would be a great event for us. There
would be no questions asked if we had the opportunity. - Is there a band that you like to tour with?
Cheap Trick of course.
8. If you were stranded on a desert island and given
an mp-3 player which you could only download one
album, what would it be?
The Beatles Sgt. Peppers album
9. Your current album “Full Service” has awesome
music, is the band currently working on new music?
Yes, currently we are in the demo phase, we should
start recording by August or September. The new CD
should be out by the end of the year.
10. What is the funniest or most embarrassing moment
you experienced while performing on stage?
The funniest was when my bass player had a chew able
loaded gummy bear. It was really funny to me, perhaps
not to him. Most embarrassing was when my guitar
player hit me on the head with his guitar and knocked
me to the floor.
THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
