LIFETIME GONG FOR CHARLIE
A search and rescue dog has posthumously
received the prestigious PDSA Order of
Merit for his outstanding devotion to duty,
and service to society.
Border Collie Charlie, from Dorset,
completed hundreds of searches in boggy
woodland, dense undergrowth, burnt-out
buildings, and landslide zones, alongside
his volunteer handler Matt Cooke, during
an illustrious 10-year career.
Canine colleague Zak, from Dorset Search
Dogs, received the award — known as the
animals’ OBE — on behalf of Charlie, who
sadly passed away in 2017.
“Charlie was a truly exceptional animal
and an incredibly worthy recipient of
this medal,” said PDSA director general
Jan McLoughlin.

PETS BOOST MENTAL HEALTH,
SAYS NOAH REPORT
The National Oice of Animal Health
(NOAH) has released research revealing
that having a childhood pet helps improve
UK adults’ ability to cope with stress and
mental health issues.
According to the study, more than 29
million Brits (55 per cent) believe that
owning or looking after an animal when
young can help to build stronger coping
mechanisms in stressful situations later
in life.
Over half (52 per cent) of the 2,000-plus
UK adults surveyed agreed that pets helped
boost their mood in times of distress and
upset, and one in ive (20 per cent) would
turn to their pets for comfort.

LETS FOR PETS GETS
GOVERNMENT GREEN LIGHT
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick MP
has announced an overhaul of modern
tenancy contracts to make it easier for
responsible renters to have well-behaved
pets in their homes.
Currently, only around seven per cent

of landlords advertise homes as
suitable for animals, meaning that
many owners struggle to ind suitable
accommodation, while some are forced
to give up their pets.
Now automatic restrictions on
well-behaved pets will be removed from
lease agreements, with total bans only
being implemented in situations or
properties, such as lats, where it may
be impractical.

PUPTASTIC LITTER COULD BE
RECORD-BREAKER
A Great Dane X American Bulldog has
given birth naturally to 21 puppies,
which could be a new Guinness
World Record.
Mary Jane (MJ), who’s owned by Joanne
Hine from the Isle of Man, now has 14
puppies — named after chocolate bars
— to care for, after six were sadly stillborn
and one died shortly after birth.
All the pups have inherited their
mum’s black and white colouring and
the face of their father — a Bull Mastif
X Rottweiler.
