This month we have...

... been to the Afternoon Tea Week Launch and Awards Event

For the launch of this year’s Afternoon Tea Week, which will be
held from 8th–14th August, and to discover the winners of the first
inaugural Afternoon Tea Awards, we were invited to Grosvenor
House Hotel by AfternoonTea.co.uk. The Champagne and afternoon
tea reception was a brilliant event with over 30 of London’s finest
hotels and restaurants in attendance, eager to hear the results of the
prestigious awards. With so many exceptional afternoon tea creators
in the room, Grosvenor House Hotel did an amazing job of serving
up exquisite finger sandwiches and delicious desserts to all of the
guests. A display of the afternoon tea in pretty bird houses, wooden
crates and flower pots gave it a garden theme and definitely kept the
food at the centre of everyone’s attention!

Martha Collison, the youngest ever Great British Bake Off contestant
from the 2014 series, was there to present the Afternoon Tea
Awards 2016 with Managing Director of AfternoonTea.co.uk, Keith
Newton. We also spotted Cherish Finden, Executive Pastry Chef at
the Langham London and Crème de la Crème judge, who was looking
very glamorous! With so many amazing Afternoon Teas on offer,
it must have been a tough job for the panel to decide the winners.
Best Traditional Afternoon Tea was awarded to Claridge’s, Best
Contemporary Afternoon Tea went to The Mandarin Oriental, Best
Themed Afternoon Tea to Sanderson London and finally, Best Family
Friendly Afternoon Tea went to Grosvenor House Hotel. Fourteen
additional hotels and restaurants, including The Langham, Fortnum
& Mason and The Dorchester were highly commended, whilst 11
were commended.

... seen a cupcake version of Big Ben!

Donna Air created a six-foot Big Ben made from 240 cupcakes to
celebrate Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day, in association with
woman&home. Donna called on everyone to join her in celebrating
the day, which is dedicated to raising funds to defeat dementia with
the small but mighty cupcake.

The first ever UK Cupcake Day was launched on 16th June as
numbers of people with dementia are set to rise to over 1 million
by 2021. Everyone was encouraged to bake, sell or buy cupcakes
at events up and down the country to help raise money to beat
dementia. Every cupcake sold will help Alzheimer’s Society find a
cure, fund vital services and campaign for the rights of people with
dementia.

Donna Air, model, actress and Alzheimer’s Society supporter, said:
“Until recently, my amazing grandpa, Joe, was one of the 850,
people living with dementia in the UK. I’m proud to support
Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day because I want to do all I can to
raise money and help defeat dementia for my grandpa and everyone
affected by this condition.”

Donna Air is the latest celebrity to join Alzheimer’s Society’s cupcake
crusade, also supported by BBC’s Great British Bake Off judge Paul
Hollywood, actress Ruth Jones, comedian Jo Brand and chef Lorraine
Pascale.
