Cake Hack

Delivered to your door every month, Cake
Bag offers cake decorating moulds, cutters,
stencils and extra treats.

With a monthly subscription costing £15,
plus postage and packaging, Cake Bag brings
you a bundle of 6-8 products each month all
connected by a theme. Or, for a taster, you
can purchase a one-off Cake Bag for £18, plus
postage and packaging.

To see what it’s all about, Cake Bag sent us
two bags to try. With the May bag, which
had a gold and glam theme, we made some
cupcakes. With the June bag, which had a
beach theme, we decorated a cake board in
the same way you could decorate a cake.

Firstly, we were impressed with the value of
the contents compared to the cost of the bag.
Both of the bags included a variety of high
quality products that could be used to create
cakes with the bag’s theme in mind, or used
as tools to decorate cakes in multiple styles.
Inside each bag is a little booklet explaining
what each item is and giving inspiration of
what to create. Extra treats in the May bag
were a fridge magnet and a lollipop, and
perfect for Summer, the June bag included a
stick of rock.

For the gold and glam themed bag, we made a
set of four cupcakes decorated in an art deco,
jewelled style. After covering our cupcakes
in dark grey sugarpaste, we started with the
specially designed stencil from Truly Madly
Sweetly Cupcakes. We applied some dust over
the stencil to create the effect of the Gatsby
inspired border on the cupcake.

Next, we created some gems with the Wilton
Jewellery Mould and some white gum paste.
A quick dust of the mould with cornflour and
it was easy to fill the mould with paste, pinch
away the excess, and then turn it over for the
gems to pop out. Each jewel was painted with
gold edible paint and left to dry.

Patchwork Cutters’ Picot Dots Cutter was a
great addition to this bag. Again, we painted
the cut out pieces with edible gold paint to
create cupcake decorations. But all of these
items would be useful for different styles of
cake – the Jewellery Mould will provide a
quick and easy way to create decorations for
lots of cakes and can be coloured any way you
like. The Picot Dots can be used to create a
traditional look or even as an impression tool.
Finishing touches were added to our cupcakes
with the edible House of Cake Gold Diamond
Studs – so glamorous!

Getting set for Summer with the June Cake
Bag, we loved the ‘Meet Me At The Beach’
theme. As this month’s bag was in association
with Blue Door Bakery, a full tutorial was also
included. This handy guide took us through
the steps of how to create the striped deck

chair topper using the JEM Deck Chair Cutter,
the polka dot beach towel using PME’s Round
Plunger Cutter and a wave border using
FMM’s Frill Cutter Set – all of which were
included in the bag. Also inside was Renshaw
Flower and Modelling Paste, Squires High
Strength Professional Paste Food Colours and
some striped ribbon. We deviated from the
tutorial slightly, using the FMM Frill Cutters
to create layers of paste in different shades
of blue for the appearance of the sea’s waves
arriving on the shoreline.

We had lots of fun playing around with the
products in both of these Cake Bags and
would definitely appreciate such a delivery
every month. Cake Bag provides exciting
inspiration and great value products. It’s
perfect for cake decorators who would like to
try new things and develop their skills. Plus, it
all arrives in a pretty package with a re-usable
canvas bag!
