  • Always check the flow of
    colour from your airbrush onto
kitchen paper first. To do this,
fill the airbrush cap with colour,
    turn on the compressor and
    choose the desired mode. Spray
onto kitchen paper to see if
the colour is spraying evenly or
    spitting. If spitting, your airbrush
    may be blocked so thorough
    cleaning is recommended.
Diluting colours with a spirit will
also help achieve an even flow
    of colour.

  • Remember to clean your
    airbrush thoroughly after every
    use.

  • Always clean immediately
    after using metallic or matte
    colours.

  • Add colour gently and
    gradually, as building up slowly
will help achieve the best results
    and quicker drying times.

  • How fast your colour dries will
depend on the make of airbrush
    colour, the consistency and
how gently you are adding the
colour. If you are too close or
    heavy handed with the trigger
etc, this can cause pools of
    colour and make your piece
appear shiny. A slow build-up of
    colour is always recommended.

  • Don’t give up – everything
takes practice to build up your
    technique and confidence.
    Airbrushing can take your cake
    decoration up another level.

Top Tips!

Not all airbrushes have different modes, but they can be a great help
with your control of your colour flow and therefore confidence.

Modes control the flow of air from the compressor. Maximum mode
would be used for full colour blocking on a cake for larger areas.
The lowest modes would be for gentle shading or flower work for
example. Modes are particularly useful if you find that you tend to
be heavy handed and over spray, but please remember not to ever
pull the trigger all the way back, halfway should work perfectly.

Please see the picture illustrating the different modes when pulling
the trigger to exactly the same position. From the top down is
maximum to minimum mode. Note that the distance from the
airbrush to the piece will also effect the colour coverage. The closer
you are, the finer the line will be.
