ver eight years we’ve seen
many different versions of
the original Pi, and with 30
million units sold around the world it
is clear to see that it’s popular. This
popularity is perpetuated by a
fantastic and supportive community.
The age-old question, “Is this the
year of the Linux desktop?” could be
answered by the Raspberry Pi, as it
has democratised access to
computers, thanks to its low price, and
has introduced Linux via Raspbian to a
generation of users. Children in
schools are learning how to use a
Linux OS, and some exam boards have
modules covering basic Linux system

administration tasks. Raspbian is a
fantastic achievement, and it provides
a solid and well-supported base from
which learners can get to grips with
different programming languages –
not bad for a $35 computer!
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has
made plans to celebrate the Pi’s
eighth year via a network of Raspberry
Jam events this February, and in the
summer there are plans for a larger
event, possibly in Cambridge.
If you can, try and make it along to
a local or the national event and see
how Linux is being used by young and
old, novice and professional to bring
projects to life.

BARCAMP MANCHESTER
2020 marks the 10th event for the
BarCamp Manchester team. Right now
there are no details on a date or venue,
but keep an eye on its website/Twitter for
more details. BarCamp Manchester is a
great event, and it has diversity at its

core. It covers every aspect of our digital
life, from learning to code, how to be a
freelancer, how politics is influenced by
technology, and more. This free event
should be on your list for 2020.

AMIGA 35 UK
Your eyes do not deceive you – this is an
Amiga event. For those who may not
know, the Commodore Amiga was a
series of computers in the 1980s and 90s
that offered fantastic multimedia and
games. The interest in the Amiga has not
diminished, hence this event, taking place
on 3 October somewhere in the

Midlands, UK. Keep up to date with this
event via its Facebook page.

PIWARS 2020
28-29 March 2020 is when robots will
wage war! At the Cambridge Computer
Laboratory there will be robots of all
shapes and sizes battling for superiority
across different courses. This event is a
must-see for Pi fans, and there’s still time
to submit your robot.
More details about this event can be
found on the website.
