or all the exciting developments we’ve seen in
gaming mice over the years, one section of the
market is all too often neglected: left-handed
mice. Almost no popular gaming mice are produced in left-
handed variations, leaving the only option to go with an
ambidextrous mouse. Even then, while many mice have
symmetrical shapes, all too often they lack thumb buttons
on both sides, so they lack a truly ambidextrous design.
The Corsair M55 RGB Pro, then, isn’t just a symmetrically
shaped mouse but a proper ambidextrous one. What’s
more, with a price of just £25, it’s a bargain too.
Another feather in the cap of the M55 RGB Pro is that it’s
relatively light, weighing in at just 86g. That’s hardly record-
breaking, but Corsair in particular has tended to produce quite
heavy mice, so it’s a break from the company’s track record.
Corsair has opted for an interesting shape for the M55
RGB Pro as well. The likes of the Logitech G Pro Wireless or
Glorious PC Gaming model O, which are also lightweight and
ambidextrous, have a relatively uniform width (with a slight dip
in the middle section) and rise to a peak height in the middle
of the mouse’s length. This seems to be the most universal
shape that can suit the widest variety of grip styles and hand
sizes. Here, though, the M55 RGB Pro has a flared back section
that’s wider and taller than the rest of the mouse.
We didn’t really find this shape to be an ideal match for
any grip style. For fingertip grip, the bulky back end gets in
the way, reducing the range of motion of the mouse under
your palm. For palm grip, the high back end worked well,
but the extra width at the back meant it didn’t nestle all that
comfortably in the crook of the palm.
Claw grip seemed to be the most suitable
style for the shape, although the slippery
hard plastic on the top surface doesn’t
provide quite enough grip Thankfully, you
get fully rubberised and textured sides,
which provide good purchase for your
thumb and little/ring fingers.
You get two pairs of thumb buttons on
either side of the mouse, along with left
and right buttons, plus a scroll wheel with a
single DPI button behind it. The two sets of
side buttons worked surprisingly well, providing comfortable
and precise access for your thumb, and the spare buttons on the
opposite side didn’t get in the way. Even if you do accidentally hit
them, you can disable them, or program all the buttons, using
Corsair’s iCUE software.
The feel of the buttons is mostly decent too, with no
mushiness and a precise response. However, the left and
right click are a little heavy, and the scroll wheel rocks
from side to side a little too much.
You can also adjust this mouse’s single lighting zone via
software. A backlit Corsair logo on the rear can be set to
any colour and a variety of colour-changing patterns, such
as Rainbow and Colour Pulse. An indicator light above
the DPI button also changes colour depending on the
DPI setting you’ve chosen. You get four DPI modes and
colours by default, but you can assign
more. We couldn’t fault the tracking
of the 12,000DPI optical sensor
either – this is an excellent gaming
mouse for the money.
Conclusion
The Corsair M55 RGB Pro is a decent
ambidextrous gaming mouse for a
surprisingly good price. Its shape isn’t
the most universal, but the performance
is excellent and the price is right.
