S
can’s pricey 3XS Vengeance RTX Ti system tries
to serve up enough power for work and play
without making too much of a racket. It comes
equipped with AMD’s monster Ryzen 9 3950X CPU, which
has 16 cores (and 32 threads via SMT), 64MB of L3 cache
and respective base and boost clocks of 3.5GHz and
4.7GHz. It’s designed for content creation and other tough
work applications, but it can also be used for gaming.
The high-end CPU is joined by an EVGA GeForce RTX
2080 Ti card. Despite Super-branded GPUs arriving further
down the pack, the RTX 2080 Ti remains one of Nvidia’s more
powerful options, with its 4,352 stream processors and 11GB
of memory. Scan’s engineers have also tweaked the boost
clock by 100MHz to 1645MHz, and
added 50MHz to the memory speed.
The rest of the specification is well
chosen. There’s 32GB of 3200MHz
DDR4 memory, which is overkill for
gaming but useful for productivity
software, and the 2TB Corsair MP600
SSD uses the high-speed PCI-E 4
interface. It’s a minor shame that
there’s no hard disk to offer more
space for large files and games, but
2TB is more than enough for most
people’s needs, especially if you use
a NAS box. Meanwhile, the Corsair
RM650x power supply is fully modular
and has an 80 Plus Gold certification,
which is all good to see.
It all connects to an Asus ROG Strix
X570-F Gaming motherboard, which
has the requisite hefty heatsinks and
RGB LEDs – there are two vacant
memory slots, a free M.2 port and a
16x PCI-E 4 slot with SLI support.
There are plenty of free SATA ports
and fan headers as well, along with
four USB 3.1 ports, plus three USB 3.2
Gen 2 Type-A ports and a Type-C
socket on the rear. The SupremeFX
S1220A audio is good too, and Scan
has added its own dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi card. The
motherboard’s feature set isn’t huge, and there are no
on-board buttons or displays, but it covers the essentials.
Meanwhile, the NZXT H710i chassis is sturdy and smart,
with subtle sandblasted metal on the outside and a neat cover
to hide cables on the inside. Scan has fitted the Corsair Hydro
H150i CPU cooler’s radiator to the front of the chassis, where it
extends into the PSU shroud’s cutaway. Scan’s cable tidying is
impeccable, and nearly all of the motherboard’s upgrade
paths easy to reach – it’s a very neat interior.
Three 2.5in drive bays adorn the PSU shroud, and there are
two more at the rear, alongside two free 3.5in bays. Scan has
kept the cables neat at the back as well, with the help of NZXT’s
cable-routing trenches. A band of RGB LEDs illuminates the
internals in blue, and the colour is matched by the lights on the
motherboard, CPU cooler pump block, memory and GPU.
Finally, Scan’s warranty remains one of the best deals around,
with three years of parts and labour coverage with a year of on
site service. That’s important if your PC is a key work tool.
Performance
The 16-core CPU is a beast. In our heavily multi-threaded
Handbrake video encoding test, this Scan PC scored 959,116,
which is around 350,000 points higher than systems with
