2019 RACE RECAP

After a mutedperformancein Melbourne,Ferrari
reboundedto securethe frontrow as CharlesLeclerc
claimed his maiden pole ahead of SebastianVettel.
A poor start consignedLeclerc to third in the early
running, behindVettel andValtteri Bottas, but he repassed
both, only to slow with an engine problem inthe latter
stages.Vettel dropped out of contention aftermakingan
extra pitstop when he damaged his front wingin a spin as
Lewis Hamilton passed him. Hamilton came on strongand
won from Bottas, whileLeclerc was able to cling on to third
as the race ended behind a Safety Car afterboth Renaults
expired atTurn 1.

The Bahrain Grand Prix has evolved continuously since
its arrival on the F1 calendar. An experiment with an
alternative layout in 2010 didn’twork but,as the abrasive
track surfacematured andthe raceshifted into a la ter
day-into-night timeslot, excitementfollowed. Now only one
session takesplace in conditions similarto those of the
race, so there’s lesstime for teams to fi nd optimal setups.
The additionof a third DRSzone has createdmore drama.
Ambienttemperature changes, along with that surface,
torment the sensitive Pirelli tyres. This often makesfor
wildly unpredictable races – and if the tyres don’t give
up, sometimes the cars do. Most F1 cars are marginal on
cooling, the betterfor slippery aerodynamics, and the heat
of the day in this location can be highly damaging.

the preceding straight was made a DRSzone, that’s all
changed.Turn 4 now adds atouch of jeopardyto passing
moves at Turn 1; overcook it there andget a poorexit from
Turns 2-3, and you can be re-passed intoTurn 4.
