The number of trucks
usedto ferry F1teams to
the Europeanraces has
grown fromthe relatively
low-key days of the
late 1990s (above) to
transportingtoday’s huge
hosptalityunits (right)
we havemotor homescart ed around by a large fl eet of
trucks that give the teamsthe facilities they need,” said F
managingdirector of motorsports Ross Brawn. “Forthe
other racesthey’re quite happy to usewhatever’sthere
when they turn up. We go to overseas races, for example
Baku, and you havea ni ce set of prefabs all laid outfor you.
Nobodycompl ains andit’s all workable. Then wego to
Monzaand we have ourgin palaces with all the trucksthat
are neededto tr ansport them.
“We want to move to a motorhome orhospitalityfacility
which could be put up withfar less impact in terms of
logistics andtransp ortationthan we have now.”
In essence that means fewer trucks and less diesel
consumed.Brawn alsosuggests more freight could
be movedby sea and rail – butthis brings further
complications.Seafrei ght is sl ower, lessfl exible and more
prone todelay; it’s alsodifficult to seehow it might replace
air freight forintercontinentalevents.
F1 alsoplan s to clamp down onteams exploiting
loopholesin the technical regulations. Anew governance
structureis being proposedfor 2021 andbeyondwhich will
do away withthe present requirement for in-season rule
changes tohavet he una nimous approval ofteams.
Under theproposed system there would be 30votes:
ten for theteams, ten for F1, ten forthe FIA.Immediate
changes could be made given a “super majority” of 28,
changes deferred to the following yearwould require a
“simple majority” of 25. This would prevent scenarios
in which one or
two teams fi nd and
exploit a loophole
and are able to block
moves to close it.
“We’re pushing
throughgovernance
where wecan make
changes,with much
more short notice thanat the present time.” said Brawn.
“If you exploita loopholein the future, you can be shut
down the next race, which youcould never do now.
“If one team stands outthere with a solution that had
never been conceived and had never beenimagined, and
destroysthe wholeprinciple ofwhat’s trying to be done,
the governancewould allow, with sufficients upport from
the otherteams, to stop it.”
WE GOTO OVERSEASRACES, FOR EXAMPLE
BAKU, ANDYOU HAVE A NICESET OF PREFABS
ALL LAIDOUT FO R YOU. NOBODY COMPLAINS
AND IT’SALL WORKABLE
