editorialworkreally
grew.IstartedworkingforTheIndependent
newspaper and was commissioned by the
talented Hannah Brenchley, who was the first
picture editor who believed in me. I owe a lot
to her professionally.
Working for The Independent was amazing
- there was a lot of freedom, their perspective
on content and aesthetics was open-minded,
and talented art director Matt Willey worked
there, so pictures always looked great on his
designs. I’d say that my personal work brought
me to the editorial world,
and editorial commissions
brought me to ads. By
pitching and updating
picture editors about
personal work and jobs, I
started getting calls from
The Telegraph Weekend,
The Sunday Times, The
Financial Times, Frame, etc.
I published inThe New York
Times Magazine at that
period too, which was one of my dreams.
I think a good thing about editorial
publications is that a lot of picture editors are
women, and that changes the whole approach.
