RAW processing apps used to be quite rudimentary, but
today’s leading converters are incredibly sophisticateda
are almost guaranteed to process your camera’s RAWfil
how do they open? For Photoshop, use the Open comma
on the RAW file and Photoshop’s Adobe Camera Rawwil
automatically open. In Lightroom and Capture One, impo
photos and then open the file. Processing RAWs is nomo
difficult than JPEGs – and the results are far superior.

What’s the shutter speed? If you
handhold the camera, ensure the
shutter speed is fast enough to avoid
camera shake, or use long shutter speeds,
as blurry clouds are easier to get in-camera.

Optimum aperture Setting the correct
aperture will give you control over the
depth of field and image sharpness. Don’t
use f/22 or smaller, as diffraction is likely to
be a problem.

Low ISO settings To get clean image
detail, try not to use higher ISO settings,
which may introduce unwanted noise
or ‘grain’ to the image (although modern
cameras are remarkably good).

AFTER

Cameras initially capture RAW
files with excellent colour and
exposure information, only
to throw lots of it away to
create a JPEG file. While JPEG
files are great for sharing
and printing, they are not
nearly as good as RAW files
for capturing landscapes. To
get the best image quality,
there really is no option but
to shoot in RAW. You can also
set your camera to capture
both RAW and JPEG files.
