STICK OR TWIST?
Will he stay or will he go? Will my team sign
the goalscorer we’re crying out for? Can we
bring back the legend we all hold dear to our
hearts, or will a new face bring us the joy we
crave? You’ll hear these questions and many,
many more throughout the pubs, clubs, bars,
cafes, tavernas and ristorantes of Europe,
North America and beyond as football fans
across the world enjoy what the winter
transfer market brought to their club.”
ERLING BRAUT HAALAND
- RED BULL SALZBURG TO
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
It may not have been the biggest move
financially, but the hype surrounding teenage
prodigy Haaland, added to the host of top
European clubs scrabbling for his services,
makes his move to Borussia Dortmund
arguably the biggest of the window. His
instant impact for Die Schwarzgelben –
including a hat-trick off the bench on debut - shows that Haaland is cut out for the big
time.
The signs have been there for a while, ever
since the 19-year-old Norwegian set tongues
wagging by scoring nine goals in a game at
the U-20 World Cup last summer. He only
moved from Molde to Red Bull Salzburg in
January of last year, but a stunning haul this
season of 28 goals in just 22 appearances –
including eight in six games in a Champions
League group containing Liverpool and
Napoli – garnered the attention of Europe’s
elite. BVB won the race for his signature, and
the Yellow Wall will hope he and loan signing
Emre Can will help them win the race for the
Bundesliga title.
PACO ALCACER – BORUSSIA
DORTMUND TO VILLARREAL
Due to Haaland’s arrival at the
Westfalenstadion, Paco Alcacer found himself
shunted out to Villarreal – which could have
a huge bearing on who finishes in La Liga’s
European places. The Yellow Submarine
are right in the mix for Europa League
qualification, but with a man who scored 23
goals in 37 Bundesliga games for Dortmund,
a charge for the top four and the Champions
League could be on the cards. The striker
- who netted three times in four games for
Spain in 2019 – certainly made a good start
to life at El Madrigal, breaking the deadlock
on his debut to set his new side on the way to
victory over Osasuna.
BRUNO FERNANDES –
