It’sagoodthingthatbothofourcontenders
comewithfrontandrearparkingsensors,aswellascrispandclearreversingcamerasto
helpjudgetightparkingspaces.
Unsurprisingly,theinteriorqualityonshowfrombothmanufacturersissomeofthefinest
you’llfindanywhere.Thereareswathesofleathercoveringbothcars’dashboardsand
doors,plusslick,well-dampedswitchesand
metaltrimhighlights.However,theA8justhastheedge,withitsplasticsandglossblacktrims
feelingatadmoresolidlyboltedtogether.
SPACEANDPRACTICALITY
Roominthefrontofbothcarsispleasingly
generous.Bothprovidedeepdoorbins,adecent-sizedcubbybeneaththecentral
armrestandacoupleofcupholders.The
S-Classalsogetsausefulcubbyatthebaseofitsdashboard–aspacethatistakenupbythe
lowerofthetwotouchscreensintheA8.Butit’sreallythesecars’rearquartersthat
needtoprovideseriouslyluxuriousspace.
Makenomistake:AudiandMercedeshaveensuredthatspaceinthebackisfitfor
giants,butultimatelytheA8hasmorerear
legandheadroom,evenifitsrearseatareaisveryslightlynarrower.
Officialbootcapacityfiguresshowthereare
justfivelitresbetweenthetwocarsintheirstandardguises.However,ourS-Classtest
carwasfittedwithanIndividualRearSeatPackage(a£5000optionfromnewandworth
seekingoutonausedexample)that,while
enablingelectricmovementoftherearseats, aswellasheatingandcooling,reducesbootspace
by 30 litres.Asaresult,wemanagedtofiteight
carry-onsuitcasesintheA8versussevenintheS-Class–althoughit’slikelythattheS-Class
wouldbeabletoswallowanextracaseinstandardform.However,theA8’srearseatbacks

TheS-Classhasuser-friendlyphysicalbuttonsfortheclimatecontrol,aswellasa
12.3ininfotainmentscreenthat’saccessed
viaarotarycontroller.Thesystemisn’tthemostlogicalorresponsiveofitstype(thebest

steeringisnumbanditsbigbodywallows
throughbendsonitsstandardairsuspension.However,theA8’ssoftersetupgivesita
crucialedgewhenitcomestocomfort.Despiteridingonoptional20inalloywheels(likethe
