The Good Liar
Experienced and ageing British con artist
Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) aims to swipe
the entire fortune, worth millions, of recently
widowed former Oxford professor Betty
McLeish (Helen Mirren) – but the bid turns
out to carry dangerously high stakes.
FIVE FACTS:
- This is the first time the two legendary
British thespians McKellen and Mirren have
starred together in the same film. - Director Bill Condon previously held
the directorial reins for Disney’s live-action
version of Beauty and the Beast released
in 2017. - McKellen also featured in that film
as Cogsworth. - Jim Carter, another member of The Good
Liar’s cast, also appeared with McKellen
in 1995’s Richard III, where the classic
Shakespearean play takes place in a fascist
England setting. - The critics’ consensus on Rotten
Tomatoes remarks that the movie is “less
than the sum of its prestigious parts”, but
the two lead stars “keep the proceedings
consistently watchable.”
