OUR WILD WORLD

1 Eight-legged jewel
The colours of this male
Stenaelurillus jumping
spider in Bangalore are
simply amazing. After the
image was taken, another
male appeared, then a
female. The males started
to fight each other to
establish dominance.
Shashank Prabhakar,
Bangalore, India

2 Lost at sea
This juvenile humpback
whale was spotted alone
two days in a row. Here,
it is following a group of
dolphins, as though trying
to make friends. This
encounter was one of
the most beautiful, yet
sad experiences I’ve had.
Kohei Ueno, Tokyo, Japan

3 A long, hard look
I took this picture while
conducting research on
gelada monkey behaviour
in the highlands of
Ethiopia. Geladas are the
last remaining species
of their genus. As such,
they are a critical study
species in attempting to
unravel the secrets of
primate evolution.
Bing Lin, Taipei, Taiwan

4 Sun worshippers
As the day warmed up in
Keoladeo National Park,
India, these Indian roofed
turtles came out of the
water to bask in the
sunshine. The turtles are
very shy – I was amazed
to see them so close.
Sudhanshu Tiwari,
Indore, India

5 Under cover
One of the most southern
National Parks in Finland,
Sipoonkorpi is just 5km
from my front door.
The northern spinach
butterfly is a common
sight there. A recent
study also found more
than 300 species of
butterflies and moths
in the area.
Kai Hypen, Sipoo, Finland
