FUJITSU’SFI-800R ISafast, compact
document scanner,aimed at front-of-house
use, orany business where desktop space is
at apremium. It’s focusedonfast and reliable
document archival, but it also has aparty
trick: quick passport scans.
The fi-800R is rated at 40 duplex pages
(80 images) per minute, aspeed so rapid
that it seemed as though scanned pages
would shoot out of the front slot. In fact,
this is asecond input forpassports.
Regular documents are fedfrom the rear
tray, pass through aU-path, and arrive
almost back in the input. They’re separated
by aflap that extends only during scanning.

STREAM MACHINE
If amotorised flap seems showy,begrateful
forit. This scanner is very solid and little
bigger than abox of tissues, but its only
other remarkable feature is the kind of beige
plastic we thought had disappeared with
dial-up modems. At the leftare ports for
power and USB, while on topthere are
buttons forpower, and to start and stop
scanning. Green status LED aside,that’sit.
The fi-800R comes with impressive
software focusedonstreamlining the task
of scanning documents of all types. There’s a
TWAIN driver, soyou can use it with almost
any imaging software,but there’s also a
version of Fujitsu’s powerful PaperStream
Capture batch management program.
This supports seemingly unlimited scan
profiles that can call up exactly the right
settings forthe job in hand, from aquick

passport scan to producing asearchable
PDF from adouble-sided document.
PaperStream presents scanned documents
in abatch editing window that lets you rotate,
deleteand add pages, tweak their exposure,
or add further pages to createabigger batch.
However,it’s rather complex to configure:
adding anew scan profile involves up to five
pages of settings. If you want to change
anything advanced in the scanner driver –the
blank page detection sensitivity,for example
–you’ll need to click the tiny Switch to Normal
dialog button in the Edit menu on the Source
page, the label forwhich only appears when
you hover the mouse over it.

STUCK FAST
Forthe most part, the fi-800R performs
brilliantly.Itdispatched single-page,single-
sided scans up to 300 dots per inch (dpi) in

under six seconds, and needed just 22
seconds to createa20-pagesearchable
PDF from a10-page duplex scan at 300dpi.
We measured apeak speed of 78.5 images
per minutefrom aduplex, 150dpi scan of a
34-page document, although this was
significantly pushing the document feeder’s
stingy 20-30 page rating.
It wasn’t all plain sailing, however.There’s a
knack to gently pushing down the spine of a
passport to avoid apaperjam, and we had
repeated jams on our torture test comprising
tissue-thin magazine pages. It also failed to
skip the blank sides of ourless-than-pristine
originals at any setting.

GOING MOBILE
This is aquality scanner, and it would help
make quick work of guest arrivals and form
archival at ahotel desk, travel hub or other
customer-facing business. However,it’s not
quitefoolproof. If youdon’t need to scan
passports, and you can live with slightly
slower speeds and abiggerfootprint, we’d
recommend you save moneyand buy Canon’s
imageFormula DR-C230 (Shopper360).
