The so-called ‘Metroidvania’ genre has felt hollow
for years now, but Hollow Knight fills that void so
well that we should probably rename the genre
in honour of it. You’ll still do a ton of 2D jumping
and slashing and revisiting old areas once you
gain new abilities. Hollow Knight absolutely nails
these familiar elements, though, to the point that
I’m still not tired of jumping and slashing almost
20 hours in. It’s also a game with heart. Our hero
is a beetle-sized battler exploring an insect realm
called the Hallownest. It’ll make you think games
with a lot of bugs aren’t so bad after all.
