Close Review
Listen to the audio performances again. Write down any new
observations that seem important. What questions do you
have? What can you conclude?

Notebook Respond to these questions.

  1. (a) What is the major difference between the pacing of the LibriVox
and the L.A. Theatre Works presentations? (b) What effect does this
difference have on your understanding of the scene?

  2. As a class, review the two audio performances. Which performance would
be more easily understood by someone unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s
    language?

  3. Essential Question: How do our attitudes toward the past and
future shape our actions? How do Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s
attitudes about their past actions influence their future actions?

present another audio recording that you locate online and use the content

Close Review
Model how to listen closely by using the close-
review note for the two audio performances.
Remind students to look for details they did not
observe during their first review. You may wish to
print the Close-review Guide: media-audio
for students to use.

Analyze the Media
Possible responses:

  1. (a) The LibriVox presentation is faster paced. The
two versions are about the same length, but
the readers in the LibriVox presentation fit in an
introduction and stage directions. DoK 3 (b) The
L.A. Theatre Works production makes it easier to
understand characters and their motivations. The
Librivox version spells out the visual aspects of
what would go on in the staged play. DoK 3

  2. Some students may say that the LibriVox version is
easier to understand because two of the readers
in this version read in ordinary voices and do not
    dramatize their roles. DoK 3

  3. Responses will vary.

Media Vocabulary
For more support, see media vocabulary.
Possible responses:

  1. The LibriVox version uses editing to include the
    stage directions and scene-setting information
that help listeners visualize the action.

  2. The L.A. Theatre Works version uses eerie
background music and sound effects to help
    create a mysterious mood.

  3. The L.A. Theatre Works version has better pacing.
In the LibriVox version, the introduction and stage
    directions interrupt the flow.
