NOTES

The interim having weighed it,^50 let us speak
Our free hearts^51 each to other.
Banquo. Very gladly.
Macbeth. Till then, enough. Come, friends. [Exit.]

Scene iv • Forres. The palace.

[Flourish.^1 Enter King Duncan, Lennox, Malcolm, Donalbain, and
Attendants.]
King. Is execution done on Cawdor? Are not
Those in commission^2 yet returned?
Malcolm. My liege,^3
They are not yet come back. But I have spoke
With one that saw him die, who did report
That very frankly he confessed his treasons,
Implored your Highness’ pardon and set forth
A deep repentance: nothing in his life
Became him like the leaving it. He died
As one that had been studied^4 in his death,
To throw away the dearest thing he owed^5
As ’twere a careless^6 trifle.
King. There’s no art
To find the mind’s construction^7 in the face:
He was a gentleman on whom I built
An absolute trust.
[Enter Macbeth, Banquo, Ross, and Angus.]
O worthiest cousin!
The sin of my ingratitude even now
Was heavy on me: thou art so far before.
That swiftest wing of recompense is slow
To overtake thee. Would though hadst less deserved,
That the proportion both of thanks and payment
Might have been mine!^8 Only I have left to say,
More is thy due than more than all can pay.
Macbeth. The service and the loyalty I owe,
In doing it, pays itself.^9 Your Highness’ part
Is to receive our duties: and our duties
Are to your throne and state children and servants:
Which do but what they should, by doing every thing
Safe toward^10 your love and honor.
King. Welcome hither.
I have begun to plant thee, and will labor

Summarize Review Scene iii. Discuss the events
that have occurred thus far in the play, so
students do not lose the thread of the story.
Macbeth has now seen one prophecy come true.
Ask students which prophecy has been realized.
(He is now Thane of Cawdor.) Take them back to
the place in the text where the witches predicted

this. (Scene iii, line 50) Emphasize that Macbeth
is already having his first thoughts of what might
need to happen to make the next prophecy come
true—King Duncan would have to die. Go back
to the soliloquy and point out the place in the
text where he first has these thoughts. (Scene iii,
lines 144−146)
